Programmers will never be completely gone but it will be much harder to land a job and much more competitive. If AI can speed up the work by x5 that equals to 5 times less programmers needed for that project, and guess what since there will be less jobs that means more people will apply for that jobs and best one would get it but due to less jobs you will have programmers with 20 years experience applying for same jobs as someone with just 3 years experience. Let’s not kid ourselves AI is bound to destroy more jobs than any innovation in human history that preceded it.
