While I agree that there will always be a need for talented programmers, the concept of an AI producing another AI at the behest of its human masters fascinates me. Machines building machines is nothing new, but AI feels a little different. It isn't a reprap 3D printer or a robot on an automotive assembly line. I can't really explain it, but AI supersedes all technological innovations in the creation, dissemination, and use of information up to this point. If spoken language is ground 0 and the internet is level 100 with written language, the printing press, and radio communications all somewhere in between, I would put AI at level 150 for the simple fact that it can spit out exactly what the user wants without that user having to dig through piles of search results. Granted, the information presented can be confidently and blatently wrong, but that's on the user. Putting me in a race car won't make me an Indy 500 champion unless I know how to skillfully drive better than everyone else out on the track.
