i took a class this semester on copyright in the creative industries, so this topic is especially interesting to me! also, i love that you decided to add more to the conversation following your last video. a few things i wanted to mention: 1. open source software is allowed to be used commercially according to the open source initiative (osi) so companies like lensa are allowed to profit from the open source code that they use 2. you can't copyright a style (as mentioned in the video) so while artists can rightfully get annoyed/angry/upset that a software creates an image in their style, it is technically allowed since no one owns the rights to a style. for example, the AI generated avocado in the style of van gough has taken obvious inspiration from his style, but anyone can create an avocado in the style of van gough. as much as it sucks for artists, there is nothing that protects their style unless a work is substantially similar to one of their works or if someone created a new work and tried to pass it off as an original van gough (or whoever's style was used) 3. AI works cannot be copyrighted since a machine created the images rather than a person. there was a case we discussed in class about a monkey who took a selfie with a photographer's camera, and peta had argued that the monkey had the copyright to that image. the courts disagreed by stating that works created by non-humans (animals, machines) are not copyrightable. so all AI art is technically public domain
