The fact that the industry is so bifurcated, and advancements are so frequent, means that the average layman who otherwise would know a middling amount about ML (enough to talk about it at parties) as it was 5ish years ago is probably WAY more behind than they think. But everyone's still gotta have an opinion on the internet so well-meaning misinformation is rampant. You see it even in these comments with multiple people talking about data labeling, something that isn't NEARLY as big a part of LLM training as it was back when Object Detection was the big breakthrough.
