In cognitive systems theory, we have new theoretical concepts that are highly promising as they might bring new abilities to AI systems; and still, none can tell if those extra will cause a deep sparkle or just a thin layer of improvements and if it'd be sufficient to get to human-level intelligence. In fact, as long as we haven't pulled apart human cognition up to understanding it, we won't know if we're there yet, what we are missing and what is extraneous; but we won't get there with our barebrain.
