I've been reading Dr. Buolamwini's book, Unmasking AI, to help prepare for my application to a PhD program for HCC. The section 34:21 on biases in wearables stuck out to me. I'v been using a Whoop band for about 3 months and have consistently gotten a low rating for blood oxygen. To the point I tried all of the tips recommended to adjust and eventually order a standalone monitor to make sure I wasn't missing a health issue. Until this clip, it didn't dawn on me that this could be a coded bias issue with the sensor itself. I googled, and sure enough, people are reporting concerns of potentially inaccurate device data on the skin tone. This is such a good discussion. Subscribed.
