This same person could repeat the exact arguments during the technology revolutions of the past: factory automation, railways and oil. The motivation is to make money and as a result, the society prospers. For example, a hotel chain or grocery chain will store your spending activity using your customer ID. They learn about your spending habits: the type of food you like, the places you travel. This capability is a result of the information age. It affords us great wealth that we all benefit from. Oil supply, for example, has been controlled by a cartel. The damage to society with oil shocks, price fixing and ecological damage has been extraordinary, but the benefit, likewise. What is the measurable damage to our society for following the technology curve? Perhaps damage is less as we move to lessen the impacts on the earth. Countries that hate data... they become poor and the cost of poverty is unimaginable and lasts for generations.
