To clarify, Glaze and Nightshade function as "negative examples" in the dataset. The small, almost imperceptible changes created by these software programs are actually subtle encodings that a convolutional model can misidentify. Typically, they use encodings contrary to the example described in the image, for example, encoding a dog as a cat, a cup as a toilet, etc. Each time a bad encoding is made, the weights are slightly changed, to the point that each new poisoned piece of data adds more and more to the overall corruption of the AI. Trying to erase such encoding with blurring actually destroys any data these systems can use for fine-tuning.
