The Podcast Review
This video discusses the most trending topic in the world which is AI and how it can impact humanity. The special thing about the podcast would be the invitation of the guest speaker named Geoffrey Hinton who is regarded as Godfather of AI due to his 50 years Nobel-prize-winning research on Artificial Neural Network and Deep Learning. According to what I have watched, the video highlights what kind of jobs it will replace and how dangerous the AI would become to humans.
Mr. Hinton believes that every job done by computers, such as calculations and programming will be replaced first and the jobs that need thinking will be manipulated by AI further. However, he yet does not know whether a job like plumber becomes automated by AI because it requires high-level physical effort and real-life problem solving in unpredictable environments.
Afterwards, Mr. Hinton explains how fast the AIs can grow intellectually. He confirms that the AIs brains are digitally connected, meaning the overall growth of Artificial Intelligence depends on every AI chat’s experience that we are using. In other words, AI learns billions of times faster than humans because hundreds of billions of people are using them. That confirms it will do most of the jobs that people do and, at the same time, the companies using AI will benefit a lot by not paying much salary for most of the work. As a result, the gap between the wealth and the poverty will be extreme and, at the same time, the people who think their jobs are their dignity will lose hope in life drastically.
The interviewer, Steven, also mentioned Elon Musk, one of the biggest contributors to AI, being wordless and paused for a moment when the question “What is the future of humanity in this AI era” was asked. Steven implies that even the most successful technologist is worried about the future of AI, employment, and humanity.
In my opinion, both Mr. Hinton and Mr. Steven makes the discussion based on what they have learnt and experienced. However, they did not provide the exact answers on what to do and what not to do to prevent these consequences such as high employment rates. It is understandable though because a podcast is about sharing one’s opinions and the topic itself has been very controversial across the world. Plus, even Elon Musk himself doubted the answer. All in all, through the podcast, I learnt the reason why AI neural networks are linked, and knew a different point of view of Elon Musk on AI.
