How bout the cars on the side also see the debris and compensate allowing the car to execute a maneuver. Or the self driving vehicles leave room for adjacent cars to maneuver. Or perhaps the rear vehicle communicates with the front one about its unsecured load before the accident having it remove the danger to begin with. Or perhaps the car speeds up to tailgate the truck and lets the falling boxes land on the hood then it doesn't have to crash. Maybe the cars link up on a rail network and form a dynamic train.
