I don't think pain or self awareness can be encoded in numbers which is how an AI does it's thinking. It detects a face by adding a bizillions numbers and if it's going to feel any pain that pain is fundamentally lots of number crunching. Humans are bad at math, and pain (or any other attribute specific to living things) is not about numbers.
