My family owns a trucking company and right now labor is 25%-28% (Not 75% I'd like to know where he got that information) of the cost while fuel, maintence, and paying for the truck makes up another 60% of the cost. The estimated cost of driverless trucks at this point is outrageous and with current freight rates I can't see how a rise in cost would be justified. Am I totally against the idea of this? No, as a matter of fact not dealing with driver complaints would be very welcomed. However, at the same time there a lot of factors are not even covered in this video, and that will be the hardest part of this coming to be the new standard of the trucking industry. Another thing, is that even if the truck could drive for 24 hours that doesn't mean it will automatically happen. A ton of time is lost each day in traffic, loading and unloading, finding loads, break downs, ect. So we wont see a double in profits (I would guess anywhere from 25-40%). However, we would also have a huge increase in maintence cost (Both because of more miles and because technology is getting more and more expensive to repair/replace). So even though we have made huge strides towards this happening, I don't think we will see this for at least another 15-20 years.
