Once invented by humans, AI robots could actually evolve just like other animals. If newly made robots' programming were copied from the previous generation, yet partially altered at random, some robots would be born with superior programming. The improved programming of these new robots would then become the blueprint for the next generation of robots, and so on.
It's even possible that some robots working in warmer climates would benefit from having metallic exteriors that differ from those of robots working in colder climates. If one of these groups then happen to evolve better programming than other groups (assuming there is no central control of robotic evolution), robot racism could occur because a robot from the superior programming group could believe/know that other robots' different exterior would be evidence of their inferior programming.
