Well, if robots gain self awareness, emotions, and intelligence, that makes them the same as humans. What makes a human human are those three things. If a robot does not feel physical pain, but does have emotional pain, many actions that humans would want robots to do that inflict physical pain would also inflict emotional pain. They are the same thing, and if robots do gain sentience, then they deserve the same treatment we give to ourselves.
