Even if we achieve an A.I that has some consciousness, and is self-aware, it doesn't means it has rights, it would have to be more than conscious, it has to be alive, and what is life? that is debatable I guess, after all, everything was created after a big explosion, so we are just product of a chain of events and chemical reactions... so most believe, but what if there was an architect that designed us and built us? wouldn't that in a way makes us robots too? we are flesh and bone, but that just means we are made of a different material, so either way we were created by something or someone, does it really matter?. We define life by what it comprises, and the main characteristic is that alive beings can reproduce, feel, think, have self-awareness, and react to surroundings, if robots one day reach this point, we should recognize we created a new life form and possibly grant rights, watch "Bicentennial Man" it proposes this very point, fun movie too.
