we probably need 20 million new jobs now to reach a robust labor participation rate. as a.i. applications increase we will need much more. guess what they arent coming. we lie to ourselves about jobs. theses 250k touted increases some months are counting temp jobs , short term contract labor, and part time jobs. in effect just 1 person can account for 10 or more "new jobs" and still not be fully employed. the truth is we still have 1 million less people working in 2016 than in 2007. and we have added 10million or so new people to the work force. we need to add 5 million jobs for them.( if 50% participation is enough) side note you arent unemployed if you cant find a 1st job.
also consider we count part-time jobs and we have 7 million more of them than in 2004 ( 17million or so currently). as artificial inteligence applications increase the job squeez will only get worse. we do infact need a gauranteed minimum incomes. freidman was sort of for it in the form of a "reverse income tax". but what we really need is a universal basic income the mlk jr type. you get it whether you are rich or poor employed or not. friedman's idea was a sliding scale tax refund idea. ie make 30k+ get nothing, make 20k get 5k , make 10k get 4k make nothing get 3k. so it has incentive to work but basic income actually works better in trials if everyone gets at eat 10-15k or so a year regardless of their income.. - still plenty of incentive to work. infact more people work than when broke or when getting a lower supplemnet amount for making more. , and they started more business got more college educations and saved more money and invested more . beside increased employment some other interesting findings ( some economist considered counter intuitive) results were not only theft went down ( expected) but drug use and prostitution and alcohol sales also went down too( to some unexpected) . the thing that caused the biggest problem was landords. rents skyrocketed so if we have a universal basic income , we also need rent control. probaby an increased property tax rate for evry additional property would also help as investment rent seeking - is counter productive to affordable home ownership. it has the capacity to suck money out of poor people preventing the savings needed to buy their own homes.
- sorry - can go on and on,,, will stop please reseach automation, employment statisticis and technological unemployment and universal basic income ideas and trials for more. aso consider without demand market economies will collapse. and that is where the trends are heading.
