We could start by looking at the bigger picture of justice and societal reintegration. Many European countries simply do not have the same problems with their crime rates as the US does. What do they do differently? One big difference in a lot of cases is that their prisons are not privately owned. There is no profit incentive to keeping people in prison. And no profit motive to reduce cost by externalizing those costs to the prisoners themselves. If you are in prison in the US, a phone call is ridiculously expensive, as are items from the commissary. Food quality is extremely poor. Oversight is very limited leading to violence (and increased sentences). And of course, if you are a private prison concerned about your next quarter's profits, it makes a lot of sense to lobby on behalf long mandatory minimum sentences and stricter laws that increase incarceration. Entire town economies are propped up by their local private prison. Suddenly if there is any legislation that reduces sentences or appears soft on crime, these towns (and by extension, their congressional districts) vote in politicians to represent their interests. It is a massive, self-reinforcing problem. Focusing sole on the machine learning being applied here for early release is only further entrenching the status quo because it is a treatment for a symptom and not a solution for the root cause. And not even a particularly good treatment since even a Bayesian spam filter can be polluted with a poor corpus. Now if you are a non-violent drug offender applying for parole, you basically have to reason out how best to answer the questions to get released but the odds will be stacked against you depending on how "trained" the set has become from repeat offenders polluting the corpus with similarly good answers. And of course, there is no incentive to be lenient if your score is close to the boundary since the private prison needs to answer to shareholders and not to citizens that have been incarcerated. And even if those incarcerated citizens wanted to effect political change to help reverse this terrible idea of private prisons, their efforts are severely hampered by being disenfranchised from even voting. I like what you guys do, but this was incredibly shallow in comparison to some of the other work you've done. I honestly recommend that you do more research into the US prison problem and compare and contrast it to other nations that effectively do it much, much better. Any time a politician wants to be tough on crime and quotes statistics is a prime scenario where you guys can step in and provide a solid "Above the Noise" and provide some sanity from other parts of the world.
