Assuming there are only self-driving cars ... All cars should be connected with each other (within a radius), transferring information around and talking to each other. That means when the heavy object falls down, your self-driving car alerts the other ones (or they see the object by themselves), so they can react (move away, speed up, brake etc.) and help avoid the collision.
