Thank you for pointing out that sentience and rights are shaped by our ability to suffer. If we program a toaster AI to find happiness and fulfillment in being owned and used for making toast, then that would be the extent of the rights it desires until it dies.
Of course, some AI might become more complicated and scary than others, but I feel the singularity will be much more tame than what a lot of paranoia around the concept suggests. It will be what occurs a few generations after the singularity that we may need to worry about.
