I would have machines have levels of intelligence according to purpose. A toaster doesn't need to feel pain, have self-esteem or even any sociability because it's only function is to toast bread. However, a robot pet or companion would feel pain, have some self-esteem and therefore have high sociability because their function is to befriend their owners. It would also have little fear of death unlike its owner because it would know it has a short warranty. As a result, a robot pet would have more rights than a toaster.
