Ah hell, late to the party but here is my take: If an AI can make you believe it is a person, treat them like it. If it is a real person, you are making the life of someone better by treating them with decency. If they aren't, well, What do you have to lose? You got your pleasently stimulating interaction, and maybe felt friendship too.
You can't lose either way. The AI could. Thus your effort to treat one well is basic human decency.
