Yes autonomous and platooning trucks are here, but the driving public and governments will not tolerate driverless (meaning, no one in the cab) trucks on the highways anytime in the near future. Not for many years. It's not up to the trucking industry to decide. The drivers for most large fleets also do more than drive and then wait at loading docks, often for hours. They also serve in many cases as the company's PR people at the shipper and receiver's location. Yes the technology exists but the public and government will weigh in because most people are just not comfy with being surrounded by 80,000 pound of steel simply on autopilot. Planes can take off, fly and land without a pilot, but so far, not one pilot has lost his or her job. Autonomous trucks will eventually require a whole new job classification much similar to the jobs done now in pre-flight for airplanes.
