This topic needs to be taken more seriously than it usually is. As an aspiring software engineer, I'm against attempts to create sentient AI. It opens up too many ethical concerns, and defeats the original purpose of robots. Robots and machines, in their current state, are meant to make our lives simpler, easier, and overall more enjoyable, like any tool or invention. Giving them the capacity for suffering or the need of rights removes their usefulness as tools to us, and further burdens us with moral conundrums.
