I could imagine a human passenger as a security guard who also performs some sort of work and/or rest during transit. And if the money saved in this scenario is re-invested in other pursuits like R&D or employee training, people could still have plenty of jobs, perhaps better ones. It's not automatically doomsday to have a machine do a task, as long as a person can be given another task to do.
