Not really if you can’t start the car without giving a BAC reading and showing your unobstructed eyes to a camera. I mean, I’m sure someone will eventually find ways to trick the sensors but it’ll probably take some real effort. According to the CDC, ignition interlock devices [reduce DUI repeat offenses by 70%](https://www.cdc.gov/impaired-driving/ignition-interlock/index.html). My bigger concern is privacy. You better be using biometrics on your iPhone because otherwise your car’s camera will capture you entering your passcode, and law enforcement will get full access to everything. I hate the cameras but I’m still somewhat torn on the BAC reading. I drive for a living and I see A LOT of drunk drivers on the road at night. It infuriates me knowing that each of these cunts could be driving on the same road as my parents. I even have a Siri shortcut set up to instantly report them to the police (location, direction, vehicle description, reason I know they’re impaired) and I’ve reported at least half a dozen people over the last year, but to my knowledge none were arrested. Police can’t realistically intercept them, especially in the suburbs. First DUI offense should require installing an ignition interlock. Second offense should forfeit and auction the car and use the proceeds to provide free uber/taxi credit for those convicted of a second offense. It’s probably much cheaper than prosecuting and incarcerating people, imposes no burden on responsible drivers, and eliminates the necessity/ability for people to drive on a suspended license.
