This is an underrated aspect. Even disregarding the literal “spy” aspect, the tracking and recommendation system can be tiresome, even gross. When we used to talk music to friends, they might recommend some similar music, because they love music too or they like a certain band. They never factor in the portion of a $15 CD purchase the band is going to get. There’s no financial motivation to talk music, just pure love. When a streaming service recommends music, it comes from a position of wanting money. It wants your engagement, to keep the subscription going, or to reward artists and labels that paid the service for promotion. It can lead to discovering good music, but there’s no soul behind it. It’s not done out of love.
