Interesting point but to be fair, this is highly cultural linked behaviour. In my culture for example small talk above a certain threshold is a red flag with regard to trustfullness. You don't ask how someone is unless you want the honest answer. Since US LLMs are currently used most widely, common interaction is aligned with American culture, what leads to perceived odd behavior in interactions with for example certain Europeans or Asians. The point i want to make is that the sycophancy problem might be some kind of bias or emergent pattern rooted in implicit cultural peculiarities within the training data.
