Argument 1 would be that someone will do it anyway, so why shouldn't it be us.
A more compelling argument in light of the industrial revolution would be that if some tech development grants you an advantage, it follows that someone without that tech must be left at a disadvantage, which is unacceptable. No one is going to purposely leave themselves at a disadvantage.
