Agreed. I think federated internet and self-hosting is getting ready to take it's place. (Think social media, but without the centralized control and censorship; like the old days of there being a bajillion angelfire sites or wordpress, or forum for any weird subject or blog you wanted) It'll be a generational shift, but if there's a big AI flop and plethora of digital storage on the market from companies going under (Like the dot-com bust), it could lead to a huge rise in self-hosting. Doubly so if people are generating materials themselves that are lighter-weight than the spyware-piggybacked internet of today. (A HUGE amount of data isn't actually necessary for the current internet to function, yet cycles back and forth taking up bandwith anyways) Cheap hosting and accessible hardware makes for good fuel for a shift. If the ISP's don't play nice, localized mesh networks are getting more available and are popular with the cyber-anarchy movement and could take their place. It really comes down to usage and sentiment though; will people \*just get over\* being manipulated and stolen from, or will they actually go through with the effort to migrate again.
