Curing cancer is hard, like enormously hard. Having AI micromanage the bathroom break policy of warehouse workers, or replace the person taking orders at a drive through is not, and will make money for the people in a position to decide that. So yes, it has a lot of potential prosocial and transformative uses, and a lot of shitty ones. The economic incentives short term are disproportionately to the shitty ones - cutting costs, extracting more value, denying insurance claims, figuring out how to pay people less and charge them more - so we'll see more of that until things settle into a new normal. But it can also be used to analyze the output of radio telescopes and maybe figure out what whales are communicating when they sing.
