Not the case for clinical trial data. Data is scrambled or any and all identifiable data if it does have to be exported and shared. Also then sent securely as well as encrypted it's password protected. Identifiable data is your name, dob, address, IP address, NHS number etc (increasingly biometrics). There are additional rules again for your sensitive data, health data, sexual orientation, gender etc All is scrambled or redacted prior to sharing or sits on a separate database that cannot be viewed or exported by anyone without clearance (if exportable at all). Med records then are assigned a unique anonymous identifier . We have data management plans that ensure identifiable data sits separately and nowhere near the other data and the code to link individual to patient record is under the strictest access permissions. We are not allowed to collect or export IP addresses and every single person touching that data is bound by GDPR, gov regulation, good clinical practice etc to maintain that person's anonymity. If there's a mistake that de-anonymises a patient it is logged as a breach and there's a whole CAPPA process where everything is scrutinised to remove the error and also further safeguards put in place to close the loop and ensure that particular mistakes can't happen again - this is reportable even between staff communicating who do have access rights. The mishandling of data out in the wild astounds me though.... Will never forget a local council trying to show us a trend in their data and they just screen shared their entire database, names, locations, dates of birth everything 🤦‍♀️ obviously we are all duty bound not to share what we saw and we have crazy high levels of data protection training, but we did not have authorised access to have been shown that data, we grabbed screen control real fast and shut it down but jfc the guy didn't seem to even know he shouldn't share that with us at all.
