I wonder if there's also an element of romanticizing suffering and feeling like it lends your cause righteousness? People often position themselves as the injured party, even when they're not, because it makes them feel more legitimate. Watch how many arguments devolve into both sides just competing in misery olympics, as if having a greater amount of pain somehow translates to a stronger argument. Or if there is an actual injury (in the manospheres case, let's say maybe some of these men do genuinely feel discarded by society- there's a conversation to be had about what the inherent disposability of men in media does to men's mental health) but then they take that wound and overemphasize or misapply it, wielding it like a weapon. Just a spitball theory. I forget where I read it but there's a quote that's something to the effect of "surviving trauma doesn't make you a better person, it just makes you traumatized". or something. I try to remember that in my own arguments. Just because I feel hurt doesn't mean I'm automatically right.
