I know this is probably the wrong place for this, since most of you already made this decision. But Im posting this for the people still on the fence, because I was one of them until recently. I come from the construction industry and dont have a strong tech background. About a year ago I started self-hosting as a hobby. First just storing data on my Synology, then more services with Docker, and now even on a VPS. I always thought fully switching would be complicated and take days or weeks. With Windows shoving AI features down my throat and Android ecomming a locked-down Platform, I finally decided to try it out during my holidays. God damn was i wrong and I wish I did it earlier! For my Phone I bought a used Pixel 8 Pro and installed GrapheneOS. Install took about 15 minutes directly from their website. Setting up the phone and installing apps with Obtainium & F-Droid took maybe 2 hours. On the PC I Installed CachyOS. Took about 30 minutes and worked perfectly out of the box. Performance is better than Windows for me and I have only used the terminal a couple of times so far. Customizing with KDE took 1 hour and felt like a wet dream. There is still a lot to do and always something to improve, but honestly thats the fun part for me. I enjoy tweaking and improving my setup way more than staying comfortable while giving up my privacy. In hindsight, I realized I had spent more time thinking about switching than actually doing it. The only Google service Im still using right now is modified YouTube and YouTube Music (Morphe) with MicroG.
