The criminal justice system is very slow. The Courts set all the hearing dates -- not overworked, underpaid public defenders. She also spent three months in TN before she was extradited to North Dakota.
The real question you should be asking is what fucking DA and judge signs an arrest warrant based solely off an AI facial match? Why did the police apply for a warrant without confirming her identity & location?
A simple follow up investigation like checking phone and bank records would have immediately revealed she was not the person in the video. Confirming her location is basic police work.
They are supposed to be certain they've identified the correct suspect before applying for the warrant. The State is going to arrest that person for the accused crime, it's not a trivial step and the State always carries the burden of proof.
This woman lost her home, her car, and her dog waiting six months in two separate jails. She should have never been arrested in the first place. It was the defense attorney who paid for her hotel room on christmas eve and organized funding to get her a ticket home.
It's insane to me you're shitting on the one underpaid public official who *actually investigated the crime* and spent their own money to provide shelter when the PD kicked her onto the street.
This is exactly how wrongful convictions happen. Prosecutors wield immense power with few checks & balances. None of these people give a fuck they wrongfully jailed this person for six months. Nothing will happen to the people who did this to her.
This is your public tax dollars at work. It happens all over the country. [In Iowa two contractors hired by the State Court were arrested for breaking & entering a courthouse despite showing proof they were working as verified contractors with permission to enter the court.](https://www.darkreading.com/cybersecurity-operations/county-pays-600k-wrongfully-jailed-pen-testers)
