I would argue that aerospace technologies do not have the same impact on civil uses, therefore they were incentivized to be far further ahead in those. AI/software is different. Whatever society has it developed enough to win information wars based on it, are also ones to be far ahead when it comes to the possible economic impact of the technology. It's been reported that what is available to the military is about 6-12 month ahead, i have no reason to dispute that, because if you mismatch them by a greater distance you run the risk that other societies are going to apply the technology to supercharge their economy too, thus *still* ending up better off militarily (more economic production-> more available funds for war/defense purposes). I think they are carefully considering this balance. I.e. how to classify enough for national security, but not *so* very much that also hampers the economy.
