I was in a graduate computer science class and had a very similar experience. we all coded agents for bidding on travel packages. the travel packages had an intrinsic value, and we would bid on them in open auctions and then sell them to "customers". we had maybe seven or so teams of comp sci students all competing. This was when machine learning was much more conceptual and there was no accelerated learning/computing yet. So we all hand-coded our algorithms. I had the idea of being able to plug in different strategies. Everyone coded very complex strategies, built on layers of assumptions. When I saw how everyone else's agents were acting I quickly substituted a much simpler strategy. I can't remember if it was lowballing everyone else or outbidding everyone else. But it worked. we crushed everyone. By "we" I mean I wrote it all and my teammate watched
