I’m in logistics and manage a pricing department. I’ve been with my company for almost 7 years now my department became a thing 3 years ago, with me as the only person at the start and slowly adding 4 more to become a team of 5 over the last 3 years. Vision was for us to grow into a 10 person team by 2027, then I’d move into a higher level role. Executives got sold on AI pricing last year and now spend more on that yearly than 2 salaries, then we had a team member leave and they won’t let me hire another. Our job has devolved into double checking AI pricing, but, the AI fucks up a LOT. And it takes longer to double check it all than it would take to simply price it with my team. It also doesn’t account for factors like weather, seasonal changes, bottlenecks in certain regions etc.. I now internally smile every time they ask why pricing looks the way it does, and I tell them this is what the AI calculated and we are too understaffed to check every line. I’ve gotten a bit jaded towards them this last year. I’ve got my resume ready to look elsewhere, but I’m really hoping the execs realize AI is not the answer to pricing freight, at least not for a while. It can price shipping from A to B, but it cannot do complex operations.
