We didn't treat automated factories as public infrastructure, and allowed them to continue to privately profit. I don't really see this automation as being made public infrastructure either. I would absolutely love an automation tax on all businesses that could be used to fund the social safety net, ideally to the point where survival was no longer dependant on labor, but I don't see it happening any time soon.
