Absolutely. As an educator, there's no way the "I'm not mad, just disappointed" strategy would work with students that submit an AI-generated essay. There are moments when you have to get mad, and moments you have to get disappointed with what is effectively plagiarism, but OP's professor basically threw their hands up and surrendered with a "it's your own time you're wasting". I can fully understand their frustration but their solution is definitely not the right one.
