I work in academic technology at a Big 10 university and this is the way testing is being handled for some courses, but it is not a fix for most. We stopped blue book testing ages ago as classes got bigger in favor of online platforms. Also, the Trump admin has made so many cuts to various academic programs over the last year that has impacted staffing. Speaking as a former English teacher, the in-person hand written assignments aren’t going to work for anything outside of timed assessments. Writing is a skill that needs to be practiced in formal and informal environments. We are trying everything we can in academia to monitor usage of AI and even endorse responsible usage, but I believe we are going to see brain-drain worldwide because of AI.
