there are many factors at play in this "knowledge gap". One thing is when things get technical, they stop being reported by mainstream sources, you will not see opus 4.5 evals on the TV news. So regular folks who don't code for a living, or follow some subreddits or online communities focused on AI don't really know a lot, and they access gpt 5 without really feeling great developments, after all it's still just a chatbot right? Another thing is it's not really easy to update our beliefs on something that will change things so much, it's much easier to sort of ignore it or dismiss it a bit, psychologically speaking (this is only true if you are content with how things are going), this second reason also explains why many coders are still in the "my job is safe" camp.
