To be fair, the "don't be evil" motto was silly to begin with. And DEI is pretty evil (it's racist and quite destructive), they should never have adopted it, and they're probably paying a hefty price for that misstep. I think some of the biggest problems with Google have to do with the way it's run and staffed (which may in large part be due to the DEI problem). From what I understand, it at some point developed a very toxic culture, and it mostly ceased to be innovative when the founders stepped down (the only major in-house innovation I can think of from Google since that point has been Gemini, and that road hasn't exactly been smooth). Instead of innovating, they've been trying to find new ways of milking their users. For me, the single most annoying thing about Google's output is that its products have gotten worse over time - more buggy and less usable. This is particularly problematic due to the fact that they've driven out competition from various markets, which I also hate.
