While I think some of the other posts are *also* right, I agree with you the most. The average person doesn't understand software development. Tons of managers and C-suite folks employing devs were never devs themselves and don't actually understand it well either. And the way students program is so wildly different from real world software development. The inability for most people to understand it combined with the way you can't really see software being built is the perfect storm for bullshitting. You can claim that your AI will put programmers out of work in a few years. The average person can't dispute it. In fact, as far as they can tell, AI *seems* to be able to write code and isn't that all that software devs do? And like you said, there's a lot of people pushing AI because they directly benefit (if not from selling AI products directly, from the spur of business from other AI companies). So many of the top tech companies are biased and I think many of those that aren't directly benefiting from AI don't want to speak out against it because it risks harming their stock (after all, investors are convinced that AI is the second coming).
