In business, you have what are considered cost centres and profit centres. At most you can reduce cost centres to 0$ but you can multiple profit centres’ profits. Let’s say you could replace all accountants with AI. The taxes still get filed on the same date. The payroll still gets processed on the same days. You’ve reduced costs but not added more revenue. Whereas imagine you have an AI that programs 24/7 or, as the Shopify CEO coined, a 100x developer who can do a year’s worth of work in three days. You’ve slashed costs and ballooned product growth (which hopefully balloons revenue and profit). I think that idea is why replacing programmers is so appealing. In that fantasy land, you turn two knobs instead of one.
