“Why are managers so focused on directly threatening the wages of their own employees over employees generally?” Basically another way to frame the question you’re asking. Tech CEOs talk up replacing programmers… because they hire a lot of programmers, and want to cut headcount. It’s a more appealing argument to investors to claim you’re cutting headcount due to exciting new AI products “replacing” them than to admit they’re firing them as a way to cut costs due to a general industry downturn.  It’s similar to the reason why retail CEOs blame store closure on theft, rather than admitting it was their own poor business decisions and general trends in the industry.  A big part of the job of being a CEO is coming up with bullshit excuses to soften the blow of cost-cutting measures and covering over mistakes.
