AI still has its place in the economy, just might not be as impactful / overarching in the short term as initially envisioned. Its ability to summarize large sets of data and provide insights on that data, both qualitatively and quantitatively continues to provide value in most industries. I think the pivot we are seeing with AI companies has less to do with the functionality of AI and more about independence. By that I mean, AI companies have been dependent on investors for the funding of its development, and with investors comes varying opinions, oversight requirements etc. the pivot to ads / porn as you put it, is just creating revenue in easy markets, so they can function “independent” of investors. From a company success perspective, it’s actually a good thing, being able to bring in revenue allows them to be self-sufficient and not have development constrained by external factors. From a moral / tech development, I’m less optimistic, as this allows for less oversight on development and increases the likelihood of irresponsible development of AI. This is all to say, I think AI is here to stay, just that companies are now settling in for the long game of development instead of just fundraising and catering to the short-term whims of investors along the way.
