I doubt it and here’s why: I’m a senior engineer with 20+ years of experience. About 6 months ago I was working on a bug and I knew what the problem was but tried a few things and couldn’t get it working. Spent half a day and got annoyed, decided to fix something else. Literally yesterday I returned to the bug. I realized the fix was probably all within one file. I put it into my company’s fairly dated ai tool (gpt 3.5 based), explained exactly the problem and how to fix it. Asked it if it could fix it. Asked it to fix it. Asked it to give me the entire file fixed. I copied and pasted it back into the project. There was one error, which I quickly resolved, and the fix worked. It took me 10 minutes to do that, after I realized to use ai, vs half a day and not fixing it 6 months ago. The productivity improvements for developers who get good at using ai tools that currently exist alone, is going to wreak havoc on the swe job market. I think it already has.
