Whenever we reach the point where energy for datacenters is too expensive and tangible output from AI hasn't caught up to justify that demand, there will be a contraction. Especially of the shitty AI. The better language models will for sure still be around bc the average person is definitely using those. I know ChatGPT has made my life easier, but not necessarily when it comes to my job (outside of coding). A combo of government regulation (or lack thereof) and supply/demand for energy will decide this. I personally think tech brodies sealed their own coffins backing a campaign that was pro tech, but against renewable energy RIGHT when they started needing all these datacenters lol I'm in biotech. There is no possibility right now of an end-to-end automation of things like drug discovery, biosensing, novel protein activity, etc--but that's what was promised a few years ago. The pharmaceutical industry for e.g. is starting to see the limitations of AI in getting drugs to market. I imagine a lot of industries will start to see this in the next few years, if not already
