Traditional one-way neural nets don't really perform reasoning because they can't iterate on their own thoughts. They're pure intuition systems. However, modern LLMs often use self-monologue systems in the background, and it's been noted that this improves accuracy and versatility over just scaling up one-way neural nets, for the same amount of compute. It's a lot harder to declare that such systems aren't doing some crude form of reasoning.
