Sir this is a Wendy's.
In all seriousness, though, I see your point. There are broader social problems that are causing, as the CDC and DHHS phrase it, an "epidemic of loneliness." It's a very real and socially damaging thing.
BUT! Before COVID I worked in the mental health field, specifically with individuals with dual-diagnosed mental health and substance use disorders. In the chorus of voices extolling the benefits of 4o as a therapist and friend I'm seeing a lot of the same cognitive dissonance, distorted thinking, and delusions that I would see in individuals with significant substance use problems. It's being used as a crutch and a replacement for making sincere efforts at social connection. It's being used in lieu of actual social interaction and mental health treatment instead of as an adjunct to. That's BAD! If somebody was using alcohol or opiates because they're lonely their family would be seeking crisis intervention services, but folks on here are saying that it's not a problem because the robot tells them so.
It's like a liquor bottle that says, "Hey, screw the haters, take another swig!" It's like a heroin needle that says, "Nah, this isn't a problem, you're doing great! Would you like a step-by-step guide on how to tighten the tourniquet?"
The onus of solving the country's mental health and loneliness epidemic shouldn't be on an AI company. AND the companies should be regulated to the point where they're not allowed to put out dangerous products that push people deeper into isolation and delusion. That'll be the day though.
